Anthropometric Analysis of the Attractive and Normal Faces in Korean Female

Eight hundred and twenty-one faces, measured by one examiner: where a face called attractive differs from the average one, in millimetres.

What was recorded

Eight hundred Korean women aged 19 to 26 and twenty-one Korean beauty contestants aged 20 to 27 were measured by a single examiner, seven vertical and seven horizontal linear measurements each. The two sets were compared with one another and then with the neoclassical canons. The attractive group had a shorter lower face — most of the difference lying between the stomion and the menton — a narrower bigonial width and a longer midface, with a wider palpebral fissure and a narrower intercanthal distance. Both Korean groups had a shorter and narrower lower face than the canons describe.

What it shows

A plan begins with a measurement rather than a preference, and the measurement says where the difference actually sits: in the lower third and in the width of the jaw, not across the whole face. It is the same habit that later decides an osteotomy line — measure the region, then decide the amount.

What it does not show

The figures describe two groups at one time. They are not a standard to be applied to an individual face, and the paper does not propose one; twenty-one contestants are a small and selected sample. Nothing here is an outcome of any operation. The journal is a Korean society journal, indexed on KCI and not on PubMed.

Before deciding what to change, measure what is there.
